Syzygium guineense
Mho

Syzygium guineense is commonly called waterberry or water pear in English and is known by many local African names across West, East, and Central Africa.

Various parts of the tree are traditionally used to treat digestive disorders, infections such as malaria and worms, skin wounds, women’s health conditions, and pain, though the bark must be used carefully due to its potency.

The tree produces edible purple-black fruits that are eaten fresh or processed into drinks or vinegar and provide vitamin C and essential minerals.

In some African traditions, the plant is used for spiritual protection and healing rituals, while its bark, wood, and smoke serve dyeing, construction, canoe making, and household purposes.

It is mainly propagated by fresh seeds that must be sown immediately, as well as by transplanting wild seedlings or using cuttings and air-layering
