Spondias Mombin
Kon-kuaa

Spondias mombin is a deciduous, fast-growing fruit tree in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae), highly valued in tropical regions for its edible fruit, medicinal properties, and versatility in agricultural systems. It is native to the tropical Americas and the West Indies but has become naturalized in parts of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia.

Leaves, bark, fruit, and roots are used in traditional medicine to treat diarrhea, dysentery, fever, wounds, postpartum hemorrhage, and infections, and for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and sedative properties.

The sour-sweet fruit is eaten raw, stewed, or processed into juices, jams, jellies, wine, or ice cream, while young leaves are consumed in some dishes.

The tree’s bark and leaves are used in ceremonies, protective rituals, and amulets, while its wood serves for live fences, carving, and making soap or dye.

Spondias mombin is propagated primarily via stem cuttings, which root easily, or by seeds after treatment to break dormancy.
